Day 1 – Travel to Yorkshire with stop in Melton Mowbray
We leave the villages in the morning and head for Yorkshire with some free time in the town of Melton Mowbray (pork pies for lunch!) plus comfort breaks as necessary. We are staying at the magnificent Old Swan Hotel. It is surrounded by picturesque lawns and was once the famous retreat of Agatha Christie. It offers modern rooms with en-suite facilities. Originally an 18th-century coaching inn, it is just a short walk from Harrogate town centre and is a 5-minute walk from the famous Betty’s Tearoom.
Day 2 – York & Skipton Boat Trip
Today we travel to York, an historic city surrounded by 13th -century walls. Make your way through the medieval web of narrow streets to the immense, awe-inspiring York Minster, surely one of the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals in the world. Visit Clifford’s Tower, originally built by William the Conqueror, or York Castle Museum with an authentically recreated Victorian Street. Don’t miss the remarkable Shambles, York’s most famous street, with overhanging timber-framed buildings, and the ‘snickelways’ that lead off it. This afternoon, we board our Skipton canal boat for a delightfully relaxing and scenic two-hour cruise along the canal, including a cream tea.
Day 3 – Wensleydale Railway & Creamery
We set off after breakfast, travelling south to Leeming Bar for an heritage train ride on the Wensleydale Railway through the rolling countryside, on a route connecting historic market towns and terminating in Leyburn. In the afternoon, we travel through the magnificent scenery of the Yorkshire Dales to Hawes and the Wensleydale Creamery. We go back in time with a tour of the original farmhouse dairy to learn about the cheese-making process and the chance to watch the skilled craftsmen in the cheese rooms. There is the chance to sample dozens of cheese varieties in the shop – heaven for any cheese-lover!
Day 4 – Bronte Parsonage & Harrogate
In the morning, we tour the Bronte Parsonage Museum where Emily, Charlotte and Anne wrote most of their novels. There is time to visit the village’s many tearooms and bookshops before having a free afternoon to explore the magnificent spa town of Harrogate. Take a stroll through Valley Gardens or indulge in some retail therapy and discover the many independent shops and boutiques. Rest your legs with a cup of tea and a slice of cake at the famous Betty’s Café Tea Rooms.
Day 5 – Travel Home with stop in Stamford
After breakfast, we begin our journey home with some free time en route in the market town of Stamford - reputedly one of the finest stone towns in England; the pretty facades are very popular with film and television producers with scenes from Pride and Prejudice and The Crown previously filmed there.
