Route A, Holland Park

About the event

Holland Park is surrounded by streets of breathtakingly beautiful houses and the Kyoto Japanese Garden is one of London’s glories. Leighton House with its spectacular Arab Hall has undergone a £8.5m refurbishment with the addition of new spaces including an artist's studio, a café and toilets.

Lord Frederic Leighton was a founding member of the Holland Park Circle and his iconic painting “Flaming June” has been described as “the most wonderful painting in existence”. Andrew Lloyd Webber once saw it in the window of a Chelsea junk shop, but his grandmother wouldn’t lend him £50 to buy it!

(Please note, we will not be seeing the painting – it is in an art museum in Puerto Rico!) We begin the day by meeting our Blue Badge guide and we shall have time to buy refreshments at the well-appointed park cafe. After a tour of the park and gardens, we’ll walk onto Kensington High Street where you have free time for lunch (at individual cost). The Design Museum is close by where you could have lunch and a wander (it’s free) or you could use one of the many eateries on the High Street or bring a packed lunch and stay in Holland Park if you wish. After lunch there is an optional short walk (800 yards) through streets once colonised by wealthy and fashionable Victorian artists. The walk, with stops, lasts 30 minutes and ends at Leighton House. It is all on the flat. If you would rather not join the walk, you can go directly to Leighton House, which is easy to find just off Kensington High Street.

Our coach will depart from The Barming Bull bus stop at 8.20am, Teston Village Hall bus stop at 8.30am and Wateringbury Hotel bus stop at 8.40am
